Two very good reasons not to use chemical fertilisers, especially those with phosphorous, are cadmium and mercury. Recent legislation changes have now made it mandatory (not in all states) for fertiliser companies to give a warning label on their fertilisers if cadmium levels exceed recommended levels. Most of us are aware of the toxicity of mercury but cadmium? What is it? What to find out? Join me in my next podcast when I interview Dr John McLaughlin who is involved in the CSIRO project for establishing a list of prohibited substances and guideline limits for levels of contaminants in fertilisers.
